Child Obesity
Child obesity is an enormous problem in North America. Child obesity can easily lead to adult obesity and last a lifetime! Studies have shown that men and women who were obese as children suffer a greater increase in sickness and premature death as adults. There is a higher incidence of cancers, diabetes and other internal problems. Also, a large number of obese children become adults who rank lower than their peers in terms of income, education, freedom from poverty, and emotional stability. (Article Source:http://EzineArticles.com/6231268)
I wish to see more resources for young children to be active, more tactfulness taken by parents and caregivers to provide a healthy diet and lifestyle, and more education given to young people about what they put into their bodies, what is good for them, and how important it is to have a balanced and active routine.
  • Fat kids have a higher incidence of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides, changes in bone metabolism and hormone regulation, fatty liver, sleep apnea, neurological deficit, gall stones, depression and self-esteem issues...and these are only some of the risks!
  • Children gain weight for the same reasons that adults do...intake of more calories (food) than is necessary for the proper functioning of the body. The excess calories are laid down as fat tissue.
  • Lifestyle changes that will result in weight loss have to do with fewer calories and more exercise...period!
  • Don't buy into fad diets for yourself or your children. You all need to eat "normal food" together with the rest of your family.
  • Be conscience of nutrition labels and the basic ingredients of the foods you eat, educate your children as you educate yourself.

Assignment One Instructions

Activity One

In this ELT activity, students will experience the power of Web 2.0 technology for teaching and learning in light of the growing popularity of social networking interfaces (e.g., MySpace, Facebook, You Tube). Students will search for and identify YouTube clips with instructional value and will reflect and respond to the following questions.
  1. Choose a topic you would like to explain “how to” do.
  2. Write a summary of your explanation, using your own ideas or those of “helpful others”.
  3. Identify a YouTube video clip that explains or strengthens your points.
  4. Include the title and the URL of each clip in your posting.
  5. Write an evaluation of  the clip’s instructional effectiveness based on the following questions:
    • Identify why you have chosen this particular clip.
    • Who might be the target audience of the clip—entry-level, intermediate, or advanced learners)?
    • What is the strength of the video clip in terms of its instructional quality?
    • What is its weakness in terms of its instructional quality?
    • What could be added or removed to improve the clip’s instructional quality?

Assignment One - How to Survive a Mugging

  1. Do not argue or fight with the mugger unless your life is clearly in danger.
If all the mugger wants is your purse, wallet or other belongings, surrender them. Your possessions are not worth the value of your life.
  1. If you are certain that your attacker means to do you or a loved one harm, attack vital areas of your assailant’s body.
Aim to disable him or her with the first blow by;
·         Thrusting your fingers into  and above your attacker’s eyes
·         Driving your knee in an upward direction into the groin area
·         Grabbing and crushing the attacker’s private parts as if crushing a handful of grapes
·         Striking the front of his or her throat, with a taut hand using the area between your thumb and fore finger
·         Slamming the tip of your elbow into the side of the attacker’s ribs
·         Stomping down on the attacker’s instep
  1. Use an object as a weapon.  Many common objects can be effective weapons if they are aimed at the vulnerable parts of the body.  For example, keys, purses, packs or cases can be swung or jabbed at the attacker, even if it is just to give you a moment to run or shout.
Evaluation of the video
The clip above was chosen because of its humor and creativity. Although the point listed are not similar to those provided above, they do reinforce the idea of having a plan, being aware of your environment, and …

Welcome Grade 11's

Hope you have had a welcoming and positive first week back at Cedar. As I mentioned, if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask.
I am hoping with this blog to provide a resource for instructions and information, as well as a venue to show quality work, and share ideas. Keep in mind, I am not a technical wizard, and I will do my best to make this a successful experience.

Your first task is to create your own blog.
